The MINI Code -- Version 1.0.

by Steve Baker.

This page is inspired by The Geek Code as devised by Robert Hayden.

The idea is that instead of listing 20 lines of information about your car in your 'signature' at the end of emails and forum postings, you can just enter a tightly compressed 'code'. People who are 'in the know' can read that code and find out a lot about you and your car - other people can paste your code into the decoder below and read all about you in fully expanded words.

Click Here to Decode MINI-codes

Instructions

The MINI code consists of several categories. Each category is labeled with a key letter and some qualifiers. Go through each category and determine which set of qualifiers best describes you or your car in that category.

String all of these 'codes' together - with each catagory separated by a space from the previous one. The 'Type of MINI' and 'Colour of MINI' sections must always be present - and must be the first two items. The rest can be omitted if desired and placed in any order.

Decoder programs will ignore parts of the code they don't recognise - so it can be extended in the future if desired.

Hence, you are able to construct your overall MINI code. It is this single line of code that will inform other MINI owners the world over of what a great MINI fanatic you actually are.

Some of the qualifiers will very probably not match with you exactly. It is impossible to cover all possibilities in each category. Simply choose that qualifier that most closely matches you. If none of the possibilities match you - just leave that catagory out.

Pay particular attention to case-sensitivity, there can be a big difference between a 'p' and a 'P'.

Quick Index

The following is an example MINI Code. If you are interested in a particular category, click on the letter and you will be sent to the explanation for that letter.

This was my MINI-code at time of writing:

MCS03 BRG/W "Yoda"+++ d=bN~ lY w+*A r! ciKB+a-sCsP cMA{Yoda of course!} CP- pB+H- mp-s+++a++S+ g++ MMm+o+e+++p++++ Pt++T+I++i++C++m+++M+Ss+!W+wB++@

The first two code groups are the type and colour of the car (because most people can identify those quickly without this guide). The first letter of each of the remaining code group takes you to a specific catagory:

Types of MINI

MINI's come in several types. We start the code with an 'M' to denote "MINI" (or 'Mini'). If you have more than one, list them separately. If you don't have one yet, just list what you've ordered or plan to get.

   MO   -- MINI ONE
   MOD  -- MINI ONE Diesel
   Mo   -- MINI Open
   MC   -- MINI Cooper
   MCS  -- MINI Cooper S
   Mm   -- Classic Mini
   Mc   -- Classic Mini Cooper
   Mcs -- Classic Mini Cooper S

...then add the last two digits of the model year of the car.

Optionally, add:

   # -- if it's been ordered and is waiting manufacturing
   ## -- if it's being built as we speak
   ~ -- if it's at the dock or loaded on a ship
   ~~ -- if it's on a ship somewhere at sea
   + -- if it's on the transporter between the port and the dealership,
   ++ -- if your car is waiting at the dealership to be picked up,
   $ -- if you've made your final payment!

Eg MCS04~~ for a 2004 Cooper'S which is on a ship halfway across the pond. Classic Mini's will be presumed to have been made in the 20th Century, new MINI's in the 21st.

If you are just maybe thinking about the possibility of ordering a car - you don't get to use the MINI-code.

Colour of MINI

Name the colour of the body first, then add /B or /W if you have a black or white roof. Use /! to indicate an unusual/non-standard roof colour.

    BRG  -- British Racing Green
     CR  -- Chili Red
     IB  -- Indy Blue
     EB  -- Electric Blue
     LY  -- Liquid yellow
     DS  -- Dark silver
     PS  -- Pure silver
    SiG  -- Silk green
     VR  -- Velvet Red
     SG  -- Solid Gold
     CB  -- Cosmic Black
     JB  -- Jet Black
     PW  -- Pepper white
     !!  -- A non-standard colour

eg BRG/W for British racing green with a white roof, or just CR for a Chili red car with a matching roof. A shock pink car with a shock pink roofcould be either !! or !!/! if the roof is a different shade of pink from the body.

"..." - Name of MINI

If your MINI has a name, place it between double-quotes ("..."). eg "Yoda".

...then add:

  "..."+ -- You actually call the car by that name
  "..."++ -- Your family call it that too
  "..."+++ -- Other MINI owners call it that
  "..."++++ -- The guys at the dealership call it that too.
  "..."---- -- Everyone else calls it 'Prissy' :-(

eg: "Yoda the Magnificent"++++

d - Decor

If you have stripes, add one of the following to the colour code:

  d=     -- Stock Bonnet stripes
  d== -- Bonnet and boot stripes
  d=== -- Bonnet, boot and roof stripes

  d=# -- Side stripes or Door stripes
  d=* -- My car has so many stripes that lions stalk it in the Savannah

Add an '!' if they don't look like standard MINI stripes.

  dr* -- has a Union Jack Decal
  dr# -- has some other standard MINI roof decal.
  dr+    -- has a custom roof decal
  dr++   -- has a full body 'wrap'

...add a '!' if the roof decal extends over the sunroof,
...add a '~' if it only covers the sunroof.

  d@     -- Flowers
  d@@    -- Lots of flowers
  d@@@   -- I am Peacebug

  db     -- Bumper sticker
  db+ -- More than one bumper sticker.
  db++ -- Lots of bumper stickers.

  da -- Adverts or company logo's.
  dN     -- Racing numbers

...add a '!' if the decals are static cling,
...add a '~' if the decals are magnetic.

You can use these in combination: eg d=@!b+N~ if you have bonnet stripes, static cling flowers, a couple of bumper stickers and magnetic racing numbers. (That's an example - not a suggestion - OK?)

l - Lights

   l+    -- Standard Driving/Fog light options.
   l++   -- Two aftermarket lights.
   l+++  -- Three aftermarket lights.
   l++++ -- Four aftermarket lights.
   l_    -- Underbody Neon
   l* -- My car has more lights than a Soccer Stadium
   lY    -- Yoda.

...add '!' if they are Xenon/HID or some other fancy technology.

You can combine these if more than one applies:
eg: l++_ for two aftermarked front lights - and underbody neon.

r - Rear Lights

   r+   -- Rear fogs
   r!   -- Flashing brake lights.
   rC   -- Clear rear lights.
   rB -- Brakes also activate rear fogs.

You can combine these if more than one applies:
eg: r+!C if you have rear fogs, flashing brake lights and clear lenses.

   W    -- 16" Aftermarket wheels.
   W+   -- 17" Aftermarket wheels.

...add more '+' or '-' signs for yet larger or smaller wheels, also add:

  W@ -- if you have spinners
  W*     -- for wider tyres
  WF     -- for run-flat tyres
  W|     -- for narrower tyres
  W%     -- if your wheels/tyres are mis-matched
  W# -- if these are your track wheels and you swap them out for the street
  WW     -- white wheels
  WA     -- aluminium wheels
  WC     -- chrome wheels

(...) - Multiple MINI's.

If you have more than one MINI (or Mini), put each car's code inside a separate pair of brackets - with your personal information outside of the brackets at the end:

eg: (MCS02 BRG/W "fred" d= dr* db l++++) (MC04 CR/B "george" d= dr*) g+ MM___op++++

This says that you own two MINI's. 'fred' is a green MCS and 'george' is a red MC - and you are something of a fanatic!

{...} - Comments.

Any text between a pair of curly braces ('{...}') will be treated as a comment about the immediately preceding code.
eg: PV{STEVE9} PG++{Pink!}
Notice that you can't combine multiple codes if you want to label each one individually - hence the two P's in the example above.

This gives you a way to provide more information (such as the manufacturer of a particular aftermarket part) if you absolutely must have it there. However, I discourage the over-use of this since it clutters up the code.
